A five-legged elephant outside our tent

1 November. We went on an early morning game drive hoping to see the elusive rhino, but no such luck. Our guide told us we would have had to take the full day game drive to get a chance of seeing any, but we didn’t feel like spending all day in a Landrover on dusty dirt tracks. We had to content ourselves with the sight of Hartmann’s mountain zebras, oryx, springbok, steenbok, giraffes and ostriches.
Our luxury tent was located near the riverbed and beautifully isolated from the other tents. That afternoon, we were having a siesta in our tent when we heard a rustling noise. Sebastian had come to pay us a visit… well, in actual fact he was more interested in browsing the reeds in the rather dried up riverbed just below our tent.
2 November. We were up early again for a 2 hour walk along the Uniab riverbed (Damara name meaning ‘the one that carries you away’) with Peter. With a pretty background of pink mountains in the early morning light, we saw desert elephants, Hartmann’s mountain zebras, oryxes, springboks and kudus. There were two young oryxes in the oryx herd, and obviously their mothers were very alert for predators. At the end of the walk by the Two Palm Canyon, we were picked up by a Land Rover and taken to the airstrip. Peter was curious to see our plane, so he came along to see it.
