After an early morning walk, then breakfast,
Marcel drove us to the airstrip. There was already some turbulence due
to thermals at 10:30 a.m. but the air became smoother as we approached
cool Swakopmund by the coast due to the inversion resulting from the
cool sea.
In the past weeks we’d been used to doing most of our activities in the
early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst of the heat in the
desert, so it made a pleasant change to find daytime temperatures of
about 20 C. It was also our first time staying in a town since we’d left
home six weeks ago.
We stayed at the excellent Hansa Hotel, which had old fashioned charm as
well as mod cons such as internet access from our room. After six weeks
travelling, we had a number of duties to do that could only be done on
the Internet. Flemming spent most of his time in front of the computer
while I went shopping for some essential items. Perhaps we should have
planned on spending two nights there instead of the one, as we were too
busy to find time to visit the town with its historical buildings dating
from German colonial days. Still, our wedding anniversary dinner at the
hotel was superb, with oysters from nearby Walvis Bay and perfectly
cooked fish to follow. |
