Landing and parking fees at Antsiranana were a charming 1 Euro. We refuelled from a 200 litre barrel for US$ 2.50 per litre. Initially the HF contact with Tana was excellent, but as we got close to Maroantsetra, we arrived in the dead zone again.

There was no fence round the aerodrome and people and cattle walked freely near the runway so the airport manager found a guy to guard our plane for us.

We were driven to Relais du Masoala lodge where we were greeted by the French manager, Aurélie. We went on a beautiful late afternoon river cruise with our guide Seraphin. The light was spectacular at that time of day and the people in their pirogues or dug-out canoes were very photogenic.
