Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Colonia, Uruguay 13 - 14 March 2006

Flemming meets a Danish farmer

Logbook index

Leaving San Fernando airport wasn’t too complicated as they didn’t even charge a landing fee, so no delays while they calculated the bill.
Then it was just a 20-minute flight across the Río de la Plata to the small and friendly international airport of Colonia. We booked into the Posada Plaza Mayor and spent a pleasant afternoon strolling around the pretty colonial town.
The next morning we rented a car and drove east to San José de Mayo where we visited Villiam and Isabel's dairy farm, Cabaña Malkeko (‘Milking Cow’ in Danish). Villiam met Isabel in the U.S. when they were students and now they are farming on Isabel’s grandfather’s land. After lunch with the family, Villiam showed us round the farm and explained how they make cheese (Danbo and Maribo – Danish type cheeses).
On our way back to Colonia we stopped at Nueva Helvecia in search of some Swiss culture. The town was settled in 1862 by Swiss immigrants and today produces more than half of Uruguay’s cheese. We didn’t meet anyone who spoke Schweizer Deutsch though.

Thanks:

Villiam and Isabel SCHMIDT
