Pico to Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island, Azores 13-15 May 2006

Revisiting our old haunts

Logbook index

After our walk and some lunch, we hopped back into the plane for the one-hour flight to Ponta Delgada. Flemming spotted a whale from 8000 feet near the eastern end of Pico - like a big submarine!
We checked into the charming Hotel Senhora da Rosa in the eastern suburbs of Ponta Delgada. This is our third visit to São Miguel Island but our first time at this hotel.

14 May. We hiked the crater rim of the Caldeira de Sete Cidades. Yet another lobster dinner – this time Azorean lobster Cavaco – at Açores Marisqueira in Ponta Delgada.

15 May. We hiked for a couple of hours around Furnas and finished it off with a swim in a natural hot pool with amazingly crystal clear water near Furnas – Flemming's favourite hot pool. Dinner in one of the best fish restaurants in the Azores: Bordo d'Agua in Lagoa.

A little cloud partially obscures the runway at Ponta Delgada (on right).

Flemming looks super relaxed on arrival at Ponta Delgada.

Flemming enjoys the hot pool at Furnas.

It looks as though a storm is brewing near Lagoa but we didn't get any rain.
