  1. 6.  George Tosco PEPPE was born on 16 Jul 1848 (son of George PEPPE and Isobel EWING); died in 1894 in Ranchi, India.

    Notes:

    Born in Scotland. Brought up by his Grandmother Janet Peap. At age of 12 or 13 went to sea under Capt Pye, his Aunt Jennie's husband. Educated at the Gymnasium School, Aberdeen. In 1865 considered sea as a career but went to India instead. Tries various jobs: indigo, tea, managing estates of various Rajahs. Finally managed the estate of the Maharajah of Chota Nagpur. Died from a stroke or septicemia.

    Notes:

    Educated Robert Gordon's, Aberdeen and Aberdeen University. Qualified engineer.
    Name spelt Peap at school and university. Revived name Tosco, adding it to his own.
    In 1843 established the spelling as Peppe before going to India with his brother William to erect a sugar factory for Beal & Sym. In 1844 appointed manager but health broke down. Returned to Scotland1846 and married Isabella who died in child birth 1848. Moved to London and worked on inventions but with small success. Wrote for Charles Dickens magasine "Household Words". In 1852 went to Java for a firm to sell sugar-making machinery. Returned to England, took to drink. Befriended by George Cruikshank the artist. Died 1864 in London of starvation and typhus.
