    • Educated Robert Gordon's School. Went to India in 1843 with brother George to erect a sugar factory for Beal and Sym. Left in 1848 and appointed manager of Birdpur Estate where Delia, widow of Hugh Gibbon, was left managing the estate alone. They married on 18 Oct 1849. Later he became one of the proprietors of the estate. In 1857, during the Indian Mutiny, joined the militia. On 19 Jul 1859 a rebel cut a piece out of his right hand. His house and property burnt several times. Rebels put a price on his head. In 1859 granted Bheloungie Estate by government in recognition of his services during the mutiny. In 1899 health caused return to England but died on board ship from sunstroke. Buried in Red Sea.
