  1. 1.  William PENNELL was born on 25 Dec 1765 in Topsham, Devon, England; died on 29 Dec 1860 in East Molesey, Surrey, England; was buried in Jan 1861.

    Notes:

    WP a Merchant of Waterford, Ireland trading to Newfoundland.
    Said to be very French in manner & appearance.
    1798/99/1800/02/04 Capt Robert Knight master of "Betsy" 54 tons, owners Pennell & Co. of Poole, trading Waterford to NFL
    "Betsy" 64 shares sold to Thomas Knight of/at St John NFL. Newfoundland shipowners'list
    1814 2 Aug -17 Consul at Bordeax, France. Helped the Duchess of Angouleme , dau of Louis XIV to escape Napoleon and was given a diamond ring and cash as reward. Also preserved £80,000 worth of French Government property
    1817 Consul at Bahia, Brazil
    1829 Consul General Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
    1830 Post of Consul General abolished so compensated (with money?)
    Coat of Arms, Silver shield, black saltire, engrailed, bearing 5 mulletts or,with crest a griffon sejant.
    His politics were those of Canning & Huskisson. Friends Duke of Wellington, John Wilson Croker.
    His eyesight failed towards the end but he retained the rest of his faculties to his death.
    1860 Dec 29 He died at Molesey Grove when living with his son in law, John Wilson CROKER.
    There is a long obituary in Gentleman's Magazine. He was noted for his amiability and his hospitality while in Rio etc.
    When he died he left over 100 descendants by his wife who predeceased him. From Gentleman's Magazine obituary.

    Adopted her younger sister Rosamund "Nonie" Pennell after her own son Spencer Croker b 1817 died in 1820. She went into depression after his death.

    Jane Mary Giffard described her as small, with ringlets and a cap, very blind, & deaf but could always hear Jane Mary. She was devoted to her adopted daughter Nonie.
